Camp Waterford Sports Academy

A great opportunity for teenagers to develop their sporting knowledge and skills

Our goal at the Camp Waterford Sports Academy is to stimulate a love of sport in young teenagers, regardless of their sporting background and skill level. We aim to help young athletes learn to make individual progress and most importantly get the opportunity to play the sports they love. The sports played each day will be coached in a way that allows the athletes to gain valuable lessons as to the physical, mental, technical and tactical skills required to achieve in sport.

This year we are offering 2 camps. These can all be booked online with reductions for 2 or more weeks or with 3+ children on any of our camps:

Sports Academy 10-14th July (week 1) and 17-21st July 2017 (week 2) for keen sporty teenagers who want to be as active as possible. See home page for further detail.

Sports Academy PLUS (Week 3) 24th-28th July 2017 for keen sporty teenagers who want to play lots of sport but also wish to gain insight into training methods, learn new skills and techniques, explore ways to improve as a performer, coach, leader. This course will be at a slightly higher price of €170 per week as we will be inviting in experts to help lead specialist sessions alongside our own coaching team.

In 2017 in Sports Academy PLUS we intend to run a number of sport specific coaching clinics with visiting elite coaches coming in to lead the sessions. In 2016 we were truly inspired by the wealth of coaching talent during the Sports Academy PLUS week – from fitness testing with top Sports Scientists Emmet Egan and Ross McIynn; flexibility, strength and conditioning with Triathlon Ireland performance coach Lynne Algar; Basketball with Irish Interntional and Waterford Wildcat Sinead Deegan; Rugby skills with Irish rugby International Jamie Deacon and Hockey with Ex Irish / GB and FIH International hockey coach David Passmore and skills with Irish Senior Hockey International Mossie Elliot.

Don’t just take our word for it …. these are a few comments from our parents

“My boys enjoyed the Sports Academy enormously. They learned loads on nutrition, personal health and tried different sports, even Yoga! Niall Tuohy was inspirational. This was perfect for my sporty boys!” Carmel Ann Daly

“Thank you so much for making the camp so brilliant for Ben. He found the whole week fantastic fun and he really learnt some very valuable tips to help him prepare for his future. Thank you for your commitment, energy and enthusiasm. See you next year!” Fiona Johnson

The Camp Waterford Sports Academy and Sports Academy PLUS will be a great experience for a teenager that is keen to participate in different sports, is looking to improve their skills, get fit, make new friends and have fun!

The sports academy will follow the ethos that has made Camp Waterford so successful; we will provide quality coaching and guidance in a safe, fun environment. Emphasis will be placed on providing young athletes with knowledge and skills to enjoy sport and grow as a sportsperson, in addition to encouraging sports leadership.

Throughout the week athletes will be given the opportunity to play a variety of different sports of their choice. They will be taught skills, tactics, rules and more importantly given the chance to play in a relaxed, informal setting. If they feel comfortable, they may want to try and coach an aspect of the sport to the rest of the group.

Each day will finish with relaxation and recovery, including ‘chill out time’ in Newtown Swimming Pool. Rest and recovery strategies are extremely useful to students who have a hectic school life or need help performing at their best, during exam years.

We hope our young athletes will leave the camp with new techniques, energy, new friends and new goals.

In the Sports Academy PLUS at the start of the week each athlete will be given a personal portfolio. This will act as an information pack and will give them the opportunity to record information about their own sporting profile. There will be 3 or 4 short lectures and workshops held inside throughout the week to consolidate the valuable lessons and tips that the players will learn while out playing sport.

More Details

The CW Sports Academy will be run in conjunction with Camp Waterford’s other camps at Newtown School and will be managed by Camp Directors Chris and Rachel Guest.

The Sports Academy & SA Plus leader will be Irish Athlete Niall Tuohy. Niall is a Sport and Exercise Science graduate, a qualified strength and conditioning coach and is currently studying medicine at UL. Niall is an enormously popular and experienced coach at Camp Waterford having worked for 10+ years. David Quinn and Elaine Breen, both of whom also have vast experience in our camps and in teaching and coaching, will also assist Niall.

Niall is an International level athlete; he has competed for Ireland in Athletics and has captained both Irish schools and Irish club squads at International competitions. Whilst at school Niall captained the Munster U16 hockey team and represented Ireland at the European Youth Olympics in hockey, gaining 9 caps for Ireland in the process. Through his own personal experience in sport and from his Sports Science education, Niall has become very passionate about supporting young athletes and sports players. He was selected to represent Ireland at the European Athletics Young Leaders Forum in Barcelona in 2010 and developed many of his coaching concepts from this experience. Niall continues to coach hockey at school level and to younger kids through Irish Hockey’s ‘Tricks for Sticks’ development program.

Niall feels that ‘no matter what the level or ability of a young person, participation in sport can teach invaluable lessons that will help them, not only in sport but also in many facets of life.’
